The Charente Maritime, situated on the west coast of France, is renowned for its micro-climate and long hot summers. It is the second sunniest region of France with La Rochelle enjoying 2300 hours annually on average.

 

Local Amenities include a Bar within a short walk and local shops - Co-op, boulangerie, pharmacie, boucherie - all within a 3 minute drive.

 

The town of Surgeres with its restaurants, cafes and Abbey is a 10 minute drive;

the market town of St Jean D’Angely a 20 minute drive.

 

 

Within a 30  minute drive are:

 

The wonderful harbour town of La Rochelle. This lively town has a vibrant night life with street entertainment and a multitude of fish restaurants, bars and shops. The adjoining Ile de Re is a ‘must see’ resort renowned for its beauty and quaintness,  where the rich and famous French take their annual vacations.

 

The ancient town of Rochefort with its strong naval traditions, museums, the Corderie and the Hermione (a rebuilding project of the original 18th century frigate).

 

The coastal resort of Chatelaillon Plage with its long sandy beaches, cafes, restaurants and lively atmosphere.

 

Slightly further afield are:

 

The beautiful Marais Poitevin, with its many rivers, pretty river-side villages and excursions by boat, cycle or on foot.

 

The Roman town of Saintes.

 

The Cognac houses such as Remy Martin and Hennessey.

 

Poitiers with its beautiful ancient cathedral city and world famous theme park Futuroscope.

 

Bordeaux, the Medoc region and St Emilion (about 2 hours drive) for those wanting to visit the vineyards and chateaux of the region..
